IET—Present Around the World
Judging Young Presenters (#IET_PATW2017)
Ali was invited by Eryn Kwon, the 2016 winner, to judge the Asia Pacific Final for the Institute of Engineering and Technology Present Around the World Finals. Young researchers from around Asia Pacific distilled their work into 10-min presentations pitched for a general audience.
A series of charismatic speakers took us through the perils of artificial intelligence, the practical applications of the internet of things, waste to value streams, Labview-programmed robots, and more. Jokes were rampant, but not always obvious. |
Deliberations were tough. The decision came down to hairsplitting details…nuances of inflection, posture, legibility of the slides. Although we were only able to send one winner to compete in the London international finals, it’s clear that all of these presenters will have a bright future in engineering. |
Ali was spoiled with a surplus of lovely gifts after an extremely entertaining afternoon. This ranks among the best activities for a rainy Auckland Saturday! Present Around the World demonstrates the importance of science communication in an increasingly technology-dependent world. |
